Rail industry insights and innovation

Railroads need to know how it flows

Railroads require a comprehensive view of their inbound, outbound, and inter-facility freight flows. They must be proactive participants in the global supply chain and grow their intermodal capabilities to compete with medium-length trucking companies.

Several key factors are having an impact on the rail industry. Re-shoring and near-shoring are driving the domestic shipping once used for inbound imports. More stringent work and safety regulations affect operational efficiency. Rigid legacy IT systems and retiring knowledge workers limit the ability to meet these challenges.

This is what today’s informed shippers want, expect, and demand:

  • Rail services that integrate seamlessly into their network strategy
  • Fast, comprehensive insights into shipments and the supply chain
  • Integration with other modes and with transport management systems

Informed and engaged passengers

With the right systems capable of seamlessly directing intelligent information, passengers can manage their entire journey on a mobile device—changing routes in response to suggestions based on data that is tailored to their unique travel preferences.

This rich data can be used to work in partnership with other travel supply chain providers—such as taxis, hotels, and restaurants to:

  • Provide passengers relevant, location-based offers
  • Offer unrivalled customer service
  • Create new revenue streams for the carrier

It's all about information and what you do with it

With our intelligent rail solutions, HP is giving train and infrastructure operators the power to increase efficiency, save money, and respond quickly to changing customer needs. The good news is HP can help by:

  • Providing shared, scalable industry solutions and platforms that enable organizations to avoid unnecessary risk and mitigation.
  • Offering deep industry expertise and innovative value-driven solutions-freeing railroads to focus on strategic initiatives.
  • Assisting in development of application modernization and rationalization roadmaps, integrating legacy applications with modern environments, the deployment of integration platforms for seamless data exchange, and the integration and networking of currently-independent functions, processes, and data.

Rail Energy Management System (REMS)

HP's Rail Energy Management System (REMS) is the comprehensive approach to energy cost optimization. It monitors the location, consumption and performance of a train unit in real time and actively regulates speed and acceleration online for optimal and economic performance. REMS enables the building of a diesel and energy control center empowered to track, map and evaluate energy usage and the efficient management of energy for rail carriers. Hence, the energy consumption can be accurately predicted, allowing for controlled and efficient energy purchases on the liberalized electricity market and reducing excess energy expenditures.

Integrated Infrastructure Management (IIM)

A substantial part of the investments of railway operators is spend on maintenance and servicing of the infrastructure. Often the maintenance and exchange of assets happens according to fixed intervals. In contrast, the Integrated Infrastructure Management System (IIM) enables operators to capture the individual states of the different assets (such as tracks, rails, tunnels, bridges, catenary, signals, switches and more), record the results in a database and visualize them graphically. Based on the individual needs, the information are processed and presented in line with demand to initiate proactive condition-based maintenance activities and reduce the maintenance costs significantly. The system provides transparency regarding the condition of all assets employed, creates a central linear asset register including master data management, reduces risks and provides recommendations for action at the optimal point in time.

Passenger Service Solution

We from HP have combined all components necessary to provide a retail-oriented and customer-centric service platform to help you build personal relationships with your customers. HP Passenger Service Solutions (PSS) adapt specifically to the railway processes and strategy by providing an individual Railway SOA platform that is flexible, modular and configurable according to your needs. PSS automates all major passenger service functions, such as reservations, door to door planning, merchandising or travel, while collecting real-time, lifetime customer information - reducing cost of operation and support and delivering the personal service that builds loyalty and repeat business and managing revenues.

Customer-Centric Supply-Chain-Management (ccSCM)

Manufacturers have to react to volatile market conditions and unforeseen events. Therefore, rail carriers and LSPs are challenged to establish flexible supply-chains and delivery networks that adapt dynamically and are able to cope with change in order to maintain a positive and satisfying customer experience. By applying a customized transportation management software and modern SCM solutions to the specific needs and requirements of railway companies, HP enables rail carriers to act more efficiently in the role of an LSP across all modal transport modes.

All of our integration technologies are open system solutions and work seamlessly with a carrier’s existing infrastructure and processes.
